Headphone Jack Pinout

  • TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) Jack: Commonly known as a 3-pole or 3-wire jack, it is widely used for headphones and audio cables without microphone features. The tip of the plug carries the left channel audio signal, the ring carries the right channel audio signal, and the sleeve serves as the ground signal for both audio channels2.
  • TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) Jack: Also called a 4-pole or 4-wire jack, which is often used for headphones with microphones. In this case, the tip still carries the left channel audio signal, the upper ring carries the right channel audio signal, the lower ring is for the microphone, and the sleeve is for the ground signal24.

Color Codes

  • For TRS Jack: There is no strict universal standard, but commonly, green is used for the ground signal, red for the right audio signal, and blue for the left audio signal.
  • For TRRS Jack: Typically, the red terminal is for the right audio, the blue is for the left audio, the yellow is for the mic, and the green is for the ground for all the audio channels and the microphone. However, it should be noted that different manufacturers may use different color codes.
